Zhuang Kongshao

Zhuang Kongshao is a chief professor of anthropology and ethnology in Yunnan University, and the vice-president of China Association of Visual Anthropology. He wrote The Silver Wings, the sequel work of The Golden Wing, written by Lin Yueh-hwa and published respectively in 1944 and 1948, and he has filmed an anthropological document The Dragon Boat Festival (1992 UW Press) on the same site, which was selected for the Margaret Mead Film Festival in 1992. In 2017 he directed the film The Winter Solstice in the Valley of the Golden Wing, in which he tried to apply new media into the creation of anthropological document and inter–interpreted the characters of The Silver Wings and the local culture. In 2018 the English version of The Silver Wings was published in the U.S.

Zhuang Kongshao is also engaged in the research of applied visual anthropology. He directed the documentary film of medical anthropology (combined with academic papers) Tiger Day in 2003, which gained the Award of Best Practices of HIV/AIDS Prevention and Intervention in China, Funded by China-UK HIV/AIDS Prevention and Care Project, 2004-2005 and was invited to show the film in the Asian Studies Center at Harvard University with a lecture concerned.

Since 1995, Zhuang Kongshao has advocated the idea of “Non-waste anthropology”, which is, as a matter of fact, a promotion of multi-disciplinary research of cultural presentation. The idea was manifested in the collection of papers in English co-edited by Professor Zhuang Kongshao and Professor Seamen A Perspective from the Visual Culture of China: Methodology, Analysis and Filmic Presentation (2012). In 2009 Professor Zhuang Kongshao successfully hosted and organized the Film Festival in the 16th International Congress of Anthropological and Ethnological Sciences; In March, 2019, RAI arranged an academic panel for presentation of the English version of the Silver Wings and the film The Winter Solstice in the Valley of the Golden Wing.
